Please read this first
Bookish stores your reading list permanently on Arweave, a public storage network. Data written to Arweave can't be deleted by anyone, including you and us. It's encrypted on your device first, so only you (and friends you share with) can read it, but the encrypted copy lasts forever. If that isn't acceptable to you, please don't save data to Bookish.
1. Agreement
These Terms are an agreement between you and Norwell LLC ("Bookish," "we," "us"), which runs Bookish. By using Bookish or creating an account, you agree to these Terms and to our Privacy Policy. If you don't agree, please don't use Bookish.
You must be at least 13 years old to use Bookish. If you're under 18, you need a parent's or guardian's permission.
2. The service
Bookish lets you keep a personal reading list: books, covers, dates, ratings, and notes. It works on your device without an account. With an account, your library is encrypted on your device, synced across your devices, and stored permanently on Arweave.
Bookish is in early access. Expect rough edges, and keep your own copy of anything you can't afford to lose.
Three things about how Bookish works matter for these Terms:
- We can't read your data. We never have your password or your encryption keys, so we can't read your library or recover it for you.
- Storage is permanent. Encrypted data written to Arweave stays there permanently.
- Sharing can't be undone. You can stop sharing with a friend at any time, but you can't take back what they've already seen (see section 6).
3. Your account
You're responsible for your email address, password, 24-word account key, and any passkeys. Anyone who has them can sign in as you and read your library.
We can't reset your password. If you forget it, you can recover your account with your account key or a passkey. If you lose all of them, your data can't be recovered.
Please use a password you don't use anywhere else, keep your account key somewhere safe, and tell us at hello@getbookish.app if you think someone else has accessed your account. Accounts are for one person's personal use.
4. Price and limits
Bookish is free. Accounts have a fair-use limit of about 10,000 books.
We may introduce paid plans, or change the free plan and its limits, in the future. If we do, we'll show a notice in the app and on this site at least 30 days before the change affects you. Whatever changes, you'll keep the ability to read and export the books you've already saved.
We don't take payments today. If we offer paid plans later, the price and any additional terms will be shown to you before you buy.
5. Your content
It's yours. You own what you save in Bookish: your reading list, notes, ratings, and history. We don't claim any ownership of it.
Permission to run the service. You give us permission to store, copy, transmit, and cache your encrypted content, only as needed to run Bookish. That includes uploading it to Arweave, where it stays permanently.
Your responsibility. You're responsible for what you save. You agree that you have the right to save it, that it doesn't break the law or infringe anyone else's rights, and that you understand it can't be deleted once written.
Covers and book details. Cover images and book details come from third-party catalogs such as Open Library, Apple, Google Books, and Amazon. Their owners keep their rights. Bookish shows them so you can recognize books in your personal library. Don't use Bookish to republish or commercially use them. We don't guarantee that book details are accurate.
6. Sharing with friends
You can connect with friends using single-use invite links. Once you're connected, your friends can see the books on your shelf, except books you mark as private, and you can see theirs.
- You choose who to connect with. Only send invite links to people you know. Don't post them publicly.
- You're responsible for what you share. You agree that you have the right to share it, and that you'll use sharing for personal use with people you know, not to publish your library to the public or to distribute other people's work.
- You can't undo what's already been seen. Removing a friend or making a book private stops sharing from then on. Your friend may already have seen or copied what you shared, and earlier encrypted shares remain on Arweave.
- Limits. We may set reasonable limits on sharing, such as the number of friends or how often you can share, to keep it working well for personal use.
7. Acceptable use
Please don't:
- Save or share anything illegal, threatening, defamatory, or infringing.
- Try to access other people's accounts or data, or get around our security or limits.
- Overload our servers, or use bots or scripts beyond normal personal use.
- Use Bookish to spread malware or attack anyone.
- Resell Bookish or use it to run a commercial service.
- Post invite links publicly, or use sharing to broadcast content to people who aren't your personal contacts.
We may suspend or close accounts that break these rules (see section 12).
8. Availability, changes, and shutting down
Bookish is provided "as is" and "as available." We don't promise it will always be available, error-free, or secure.
Permanent storage is how Arweave is designed to work. It isn't a guarantee from us. We can't promise that Arweave will keep running or that your data will always be retrievable.
We may change, add, or remove features, or shut Bookish down. If we shut down, we'll give reasonable notice in the app and on this site. Your encrypted data stays on Arweave, and the Forever page is designed to recover it without our servers.
9. Disclaimers and limitation of liability
To the fullest extent the law allows:
- We disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.
- We aren't liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, revenue, or profits, arising from your use of Bookish.
- Our total liability to you for any claim related to Bookish or these Terms is limited to the greater of what you paid us in the 12 months before the claim, or US $100.
Some places don't allow these limits. Where that's the case, they apply to the fullest extent the law allows.
10. Indemnification
You agree to defend and hold harmless Norwell LLC from claims, losses, and expenses (including reasonable legal fees) that arise from your breaking these Terms, from content you save or share, or from your violating someone else's rights.
11. Copyright complaints
If you believe something in Bookish infringes your copyright, email hello@getbookish.app with:
- Your physical or electronic signature.
- The copyrighted work you believe is infringed.
- The material you believe is infringing, with enough detail for us to find it.
- Your name, address, phone number, and email address.
- A statement that you believe in good faith the use isn't authorized by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law.
- A statement, under penalty of perjury, that your notice is accurate and that you're the copyright owner or authorized to act for them.
Because of how Bookish works, what we can do is limited. We can't see inside encrypted records, and we can't delete anything from Arweave. We'll respond to valid notices as far as our systems allow, which may include removing records from our servers or closing accounts. If you think material was removed by mistake, you can send us a counter-notice at the same address. We'll close the accounts of repeat infringers.
12. Ending your use of Bookish
By you. You can stop using Bookish at any time, and you can delete your account in the app under Account & Security. The Privacy Policy explains exactly what deletion removes and what stays on Arweave.
By us. We may suspend or close your account if you break these Terms, if the law requires it, or if we need to protect Bookish or other people.
Sections 5, 8, 9, 10, 11, 14, and 15 continue to apply after your use of Bookish ends.
13. Changes to these Terms
If we change these Terms, we'll update the date at the top. For important changes, we'll show a notice in the app at least 30 days before they take effect. If you keep using Bookish after that, the new Terms apply. If you don't accept them, you can stop using Bookish and delete your account.
14. Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of New Hampshire, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. Disputes will be handled in the state or federal courts located in New Hampshire, and you agree to their jurisdiction. You can still bring a claim in small-claims court where you live, if it qualifies.
15. General
These Terms and the Privacy Policy are the whole agreement between you and us about Bookish. If any part is found unenforceable, the rest still applies. If we don't enforce a provision right away, we can still enforce it later. You can't transfer these Terms to anyone else. We can transfer them to someone who takes over Bookish.
